چکیده
Abstract We present a version of the Discrete Element Method considering particles as rigid polyhedra. The Principle Virtual Work is employed basis for multibody dynamics model. Each particle surface split into sub-regions, which are tracked contact with other sub-regions neighboring particles. Contact interactions modeled pointwise, vertex-face, edge-edge, vertex-edge and vertex-vertex interactions. General polyhedra triangular faces considered particles, permitting multiple pointwise automatically detected along model evolution. propose combined interface law composed penalty barrier approach, to fulfill constraints. Numerical examples demonstrate that can handle normal frictional effects in robust manner. These include simulations convex non-convex showing potential applicability materials complex shaped such sand railway ballast.

Collision detection of convex polyhedra on the NVIDIA GPU architecture for the discrete element method
Convex polyhedra represent granular media well. This geometric representation may be critical in obtaining realistic simulations of many industrial processes using the discrete element method (DEM). However detecting collisions between the polyhedra and surfaces that make up the environment and the polyhedra themselves is computationally expensive. This paper demonstrates the significant comput...
متن کاملIntersecting dilated convex polyhedra method for modeling complex particles in discrete element method
This paper describes a new method for representing concave polyhedral particles in a discrete element method as unions of convex dilated polyhedra. This method offers an efficient way to simulate systems with a large number of (generally concave) polyhedral particles. The method also allows spheres, capsules, and dilated triangles to be combined with polyhedra using the same approach. The compu...
متن کاملPhysics Engine Based Parallelised Discrete Element Model
Recently software libraries known as physics engines have begun to gain interest within the computing communities. They are designed primarily for use within the computer game industry but also currently find credence within real-time animation and robotics simulation. The technical requirements of a Discrete Element Model (DEM) are markedly similar to that of a gaming rigid body problem. A DEM...
متن کاملDiscrete boundary element methods on general meshes in 3D
This paper is concerned with the stability and convergence of fully discrete Galerkin methods for boundary integral equations on bounded piecewise smooth surfaces in R 3. Our theory covers equations with very general operators , provided the associated weak form is bounded and elliptic on H , for some 2 ?1; 1]. In contrast to other studies on this topic, we do not assume our meshes to be quasiu...
متن کاملDiscrete Element Model for Suppression of Coffee-Ring Effect
When a sessile droplet evaporates, coffee-ring effect drives the suspended particulate matters to the droplet edge, eventually forming a ring-shaped deposition. Because it causes a non-uniform distribution of solid contents, which is undesired in many applications, attempts have been made to eliminate the coffee-ring effect. Recent reports indicated that the coffee-ring effect can be suppressed...
